Advent Devotion, Day 18

December 18th

"But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’" – Luke 2:10-11

Advent is a season of waiting and expectation. It reminds us that God is faithful and His promises bring hope, peace, and joy. Joy is not just a fleeting feeling based on our circumstances but a deep and abiding confidence in God’s goodness and love.
In Luke 2:10-11, the angel's announcement of Jesus' birth is described as "good news of great joy." This joy isn’t limited to a select few—it’s for all people. Jesus came to bring salvation, healing, and restoration to a broken world.

The shepherds, who were ordinary people on the margins of society, were the first to hear this message. Their joy overflowed as they went to see the baby and spread the news of His birth. This reminds us that joy isn’t about who we are or what we have; it’s about who God is and what He has done for us in Jesus.

As we reflect on the joy of Advent, we’re reminded that true joy comes when we recognize God’s presence in our lives and share His love with others. Even in difficult seasons, the hope of Christ sustains us and fills us with joy that surpasses our understanding.

Personal Reflection:
How would you describe the difference between happiness and joy?

The angel declared that Jesus’ birth is “good news of great joy for all people.” How does this truth impact how you view others during this season?

Can you recall a time when you felt joy in the midst of difficult circumstances? How did your faith help you in that moment?

Prayer Prompt:
Thank the Lord today for the for the joy that comes from knowing Him. Thank Him for sending Jesus, the source of our joy and salvation.
