Advent Devotion, Day 22
December 22nd
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." - John 1:1-5, 14-18
John’s Gospel begins by taking us back to the very beginning—before creation. The Word, Jesus, is eternal, divine, and life-giving. Advent invites us to pause and consider this mystery: the Creator of the universe stepped into our world, taking on flesh, to dwell among us.
This passage reminds us of the depth of God’s love and the profound humility of the incarnation. The Word didn’t come in power and majesty but in vulnerability—as a baby in a manger. His coming brought light to a dark world, revealing God’s grace and truth to humanity.
As we reflect on John 1 during Advent, we are called to see the glory of Christ and respond. The same Word who spoke creation into existence speaks life into our hearts. Advent is not just about looking back at Jesus’ birth but also looking forward to the fullness of his kingdom.
Personal Reflection
John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” What are some areas of darkness in the world (or your life) where you need Christ’s light?
How does Jesus’ light bring hope during the Advent season?
Jesus “made his dwelling among us.” How does the reality of Christ’s presence transform the way we live and relate to others?
Prayer Prompt
Thank the Lord Jesus for wrapping Himself in flesh, dwelling among men, and all that this means.
