Advent Devotion, Day 21
December 21st
"And the angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.'" - Luke 2:10-11
Advent is a season of waiting, anticipation, and preparation for the coming of Jesus, both as the baby in Bethlehem and as the returning King. In Luke 2, we see the fulfillment of God’s promise as Jesus is born in humble circumstances, wrapped in swaddling cloths and laid in a manger.
The shepherds, who were ordinary, humble workers, received the news first. This tells us that the gospel is for everyone, regardless of status or position. The angel’s message, “good news of great joy,” reminds us that Jesus’ birth is a cause for celebration because it signifies God’s love and salvation for all people.
The shepherds didn’t just hear the message; they acted. They left their sheep, found Jesus, and then shared the news with others, glorifying and praising God. Their response challenges us to move from hearing the story of Christ to experiencing its transformative power and sharing it with the world.
As we prepare our hearts during Advent, let us reflect on the humility of Jesus’ birth, the joy of salvation, and the call to proclaim this good news.
Personal Reflection
Why do you think God chose to announce Jesus' birth to shepherds rather than to people in positions of power?
How do you see God’s humility reflected in the details of Jesus’ birth?
The angels described the news of Jesus’ birth as “great joy for all the people.” How does Jesus’ birth bring joy into your life today?
Prayer Prompt
Spend some time today reflecting on the humble birth of Christ and thank God for the gift of Jesus
