Advent Devotion, Day 24

December 24th

The second stanza of the classic Christmas hymn, "Silent Night" may be the least well known, but it's my favorite! Read the words carefully:
Silent night, holy night,
Darkness flies, all is light;
Shepherds hear the angels sing,
"Alleluia! hail the King!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.

Christmas Eve is such a special time, isn't it?

Aside from all of the traditions that we happily observe, on this holy night, we remember the profound truth that God became flesh and dwelt among us. The Word that spoke creation into existence entered into the world He made—not as a conquering king but as a vulnerable baby, born in a humble manger.

The world was dark with sin and despair, yet into this darkness, a light shone—a light that could not be extinguished. Jesus, the Light of the World, came to give us hope, peace, joy, and salvation.

This night reminds us of God’s great love for humanity, a love so deep that He was willing to step into our brokenness to bring healing and redemption. As we light candles and sing carols, let us remember that Christ’s light continues to shine, pushing back the darkness in our hearts and in the world.

Personal Reflection
Reflecting on the humility of Christ’s birth, how can we embody humility and service in our daily lives?

What aspect of Christmas Eve fills you with the most awe or wonder, and why?

Prayer Prompt
On this Christmas Eve, let's celebrate the hope and salvation that Jesus brings. Ask the Lord to help us be sure to carry His light into the world, reflecting His love and truth to those around us and to fill our hearts with awe, wonder and gratitude for the gift of Emmanuel—God with us.
