Advent Devotion, Day 15
December 15th
“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.” - Isaiah 9:6-7
When describing the Kingdom that the promised Messiah would usher in, Isaiah explained that it’s dominion would be vast and that it’s “prosperity” would never end.
The Hebrew word that’s used here means a number of things, all of which are true concerning this Kingdom. The word וּלְשָׁל֣וֹם indicates safety, well-being, happiness, friendliness, health, prosperity, and maybe most wonderfully: peace.
The peace described in Isaiah 9 is unlike any peace we experience in the world today. Earthly peace is often temporary, fragile, and dependent on circumstances. Wars, conflicts, and personal struggles constantly disrupt it. However, the peace Jesus brings is eternal and unshakable. It is a peace that begins in our hearts through reconciliation with God and extends into eternity as part of His kingdom.
Jesus, as the "Prince of Peace," offers more than the absence of conflict; He offers wholeness, healing, and restoration. Through Him, we find peace with God, peace within ourselves, and peace with others. His reign brings justice, righteousness, and an enduring hope that nothing in this world can take away.
Personal Reflection:
Isaiah speaks of a kingdom that is eternal, peaceful, and prosperous. How does this challenge the temporary nature of earthly kingdoms and human leadership?
Prayer Prompt:
Jesus invites you to surrender them to Him. In John 14:27, He says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” Ask Him to help you to better rust in His promise and let His peace guard your heart and mind.
