I am sure Jesus gave us the gift of love, just as I am sure Satan gave us the gift of hatred. We so often hear and even ourselves say; I love this or I love that. Here, I would like to ponder in thought the phrase: “I love you.” That can be casually said to mean, “I think you are funny, etc.”. It can mean; “I think you are very special.” It can mean; “I want to spend my life with you and will give my all for you”; or in a non-marital relationship, “I cherish the time we have together, I want only the best for you, and I would gladly die for you.” Almost an Agape type love. How this is written and how you interpret it, is mirrored in where you are in any current relationship; or perhaps in more than one relationship.
For the Christian, no matter the form of expression or situation, love needs to be based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.
John 15:12 New International Version (NIV); “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
One of the greatest performers of our time, Celine Dion, has a song titled; “A World To Believe In”. She is an inspiration to all those married and those caring for and loving another.
I’ve seen the tears and the heartache and the pain.
I’ve seen the hatred and those who have died in vain.
John 15:13; “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for those he loves.”
There are so many vows broken,
So many words unspoken.
You have given me a world to believe in,
You have given me a love to believe in,
A faith to be strong in.
And feeling this love, I can rise above,
And be whole once again.
Life can leave you with sorrow and pain,
But I hold on to all you can be,
And even more to what you can gain.
Now that is really not exactly how the song goes, but the general idea is there. How great, and sometimes even painful, to love and be loved in this manner. Jesus said:
John 13:34-35 New International Version (NIV); “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
