Why Do We Sin?

Have you ever wondered why we sin when as Christians, we should know better? Romans 3:23; “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Today everyone, without exception, sins. Most will agree we are born with a sinful nature. Throughout the Bible, we hear of this sinful nature. However, we are all able to distinguish between right and wrong. Many people call it a “conscience”. It really doesn’t matter what you call it, it is an inherit knowledge of right and wrong. I hope to some, it is the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. Romans 2:14-15 Selected; “When those who do not have the law do by nature what is required of the law, they show the law is written on their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness.” Our conscience, our minds and our hearts must be fed and nurtured as any part of a living body. What we feed it is what we ultimately believe to be right and wrong. Feed it lust, evil, pornography, or hatred and that will be what you ultimately become. We come to God seeking forgiveness but we must also want to change and to be willing to do our part. It is not as easy as taking a “forgiveness” pill. We must be willing to do our part. 1 Corinthians 2:11-14 Paraphrased; “For who knows your thoughts except your spirit. We have received the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God.” A friend of mine and I discussed forgiveness and repentance. She really put it well: “It is so easy to fall back into old sin patterns after confession without remembering that God empowers us to change!!! There are many changes and many sins in need of repenting!! I think so often we fall unaccountable….in the church, in our family, with our friends…when really being loved on by Jesus means being held accountable to his commandments!!! His rules are there to protect us and when we break them we are breaking his best for us. It seems so crazy…..why do we do the things we know will ultimately bring us nothing but pain???”
Are you actively accountable to someone?
