THE HOBO

16th September 2012 by Bill Davis
I have a good friend that has an uncut, even unkempt beard. Kind of long hair and often wears a large floppy hat. He says he looks like a Hobo and people tend to look at him as such. Now, for those young ones of you, a hobo is much like what you would call “homeless”. Homeless, he is not. He studies such books as the Bible and follows such authors as Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He is a brilliant man.
John 7:24 The Way For Cowboys(NIV); “Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
God told Samuel to go and anoint a new king. Samuel thought that if this was to be the King, then certainly he would be impressive, a warrior, certainly someone desirable in the eyes of others.
1 Samuel 16:7 The Way For Cowboys (NIV); “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
One morning my friend got up early and walked to a nearby coffee shop. As he was walking back to his home, he stopped and sat on a wall outside another establishment to drink his coffee. It was not long before someone came up to him and said he would have to leave. They didn’t want him sitting out there. He tried to explain that he was just drinking his coffee but they would not even listen. They just told him to leave! Now, if this had been before he had accepted Christ, there would have been a different ending. He instead, got up and left.
Luke 12:56; “You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you try to interpret the appearance of others?”
Do you like to gossip? Be honest, when you can’t really think of anything else to say; do you talk about someone? Do you stir up activity by talking about others, spreading rumors? Gossip is a way to judge others, and that really isn’t our job.  God is in charge of judging people. We have enough to do to keep from being adversely judged ourselves. If we are active in our faith, studying His word, helping and loving others, we have no time to get wrapped up in someone else’s life.  Gossip is bred out of an unfullfilled spiritual life.  It may start as a simple conversation about someone, and then escalates quickly.
Exodus 20:16 English Standard Version (ESV); “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
Matthew 7:1-5 English Standard Version (ESV); “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye, when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite.”
Why can’t we just love God’s children?
